Avon Elastine Hair Care Guide

All of my life I have been told I have beautiful hair. Not to toot my own horn but toot toot baby. My hair was thick, healthy & soft. All the ways people wish their hair was like. Then, in 2019, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent 6 months of chemotherapy treatment. The first major side effect was, like many other cancer patients, losing my hair. I was aware of this was coming & understood what it is like seeing how I watched my mother lose her hair when I was 10 years old to the same cancer. So I was shocked in how devastated I became one morning while taking a shower & having clumps of hair in my hands and knowing that I am going to have to make the decision to cut it. Thankfully I did have my mother there for support and her knowing exactly how it feels.

It’s been 2 years since my last chemo and I finally got it to a length where I am able to begin to start playing with different hair styles & color. I am not typically someone who colors or adds chemical styling techniques to their hair. I even rarely use a straightener or blow dryer. This is true even to this day. I will say though it felt amazing to hear my new hair stylist rave about how beautiful my hair is. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard that and it made all the hardships I’ve gone through the last 2 years as I worked on growing my hair back all worth it.

Hair Care Tips

If you follow along my blog, YouTube or really any of my social media you know that I have a passion for beauty, especially makeup & skincare. I enjoy researching & learning new techniques, new trends & discovering the best of the best in all things beauty. As I was growing out my hair & looking for ways to help bring back the health to my hair, I come to realize that most people do not focus on hair care like they do in other beauty categories like skincare. I will admit, I was one of them. I would use whatever shampoo & conditioner was on sale and just throw it up in a bun, sometimes without even brushing it. I know, I was bad.

Though I am not as much of an expert in hair care as I am in makeup & skincare, I will say I have learned a lot over the last few years & I do now have a hair care routine that is perfect for my hair. I really didn’t notice or realize how much your hair is an extension of who you are & your personality until I lost it & didn’t have the choice in the matter. Below are some tips that I have discovered & come across in my journey of growing back my hair & bringing back its health. Believe it or not, most of these tips are simple things that you can implement into your routine that are going to make a dramatic difference to your hair.

Shampoo & Condition the Right Way

As I said earlier, I was not one who paid attention on what shampoo & conditioner I would use. The biggest change that helped with the overall health of my hair was ensuring I was cleaning it correctly. The way you take care of your hair is just as important for your hair as taking care of your skin is for your skin.

TIP #1: Do Not Wash Your Hair Everyday

Yes, remember in the old movies, girls would make a whole night of “washing their hair”. Well it looks like they were right! “According to Reese Witherspoon’s stylist, [Cervando Maldonado] the process [of washing] dries out your hair, making it hard to achieve shiny, moisturized strands. (Firman, 2018)

I’m sure you are wondering now when or much should you wash your hair? The least amount as possible is what I have found in my research & experience. Most professionals I’ve seen in my research recommends every 2-3 days. For me, I’ve found that in the summer time every 3 days is just right. However, in the winter time, I can get away with washing my hair 4-5 days. You will have to do some trial and error to figure out what works best for your hair, lifestyle & preferences.

TIP #2: Use Dry Shampoo in Between Washes

In the summertime especially, I notice that my hair gets greasier & blah looking by the 2nd day. Dry Shampoo has become a new addition into my hair care routine that has been a life saver. Being a single mom of 4 boys who is running an online business out of her home, some weeks I’m lucky if I have enough time to take a shower long enough to wash my body, never mind my hair too. (Yes, washing my hair adds at least another 5 minutes to my shower due to it being so thick)

Dry Shampoo is designed to soak up your hair’s oils and help give volume to your hair. They usually come in like a hair spray type of container so all you have to do is quickly spray it through your hair. Let it sit for a few minutes & then style as usual. It’s kind of like those fix a flat products for your tire losing air. It gives your hair a little extra time to get through until you can wash your hair.

TIP #3: Use the Right Shampoo & Conditioner

Now I’m not talking about brand here… I’m talking about finding the right type of products that best meet your hair needs no matter what brand it is from. I highly recommend checking out this Stylist article (2020) for tips to help you choose the best products based on your hair type from thick, coarse hair to fine hair. Using the right products is going to keep your hair healthier and looking it’s best everyday.

For those of you who color their hair, like me with my recent purple hair style, we all know that our normal shampoo & conditioner may have to be switched out so you will be able to help keep your hair color looking it’s best as long as possible.

Those with unique hair coloring, I highly recommend looking into colored shampoos.  According to Beauty Undercover (2018), there are 5 different colored shampoos to use based on what you color your hair:

1. Purple Shampoos are perfect for blondes (natural or dyed)
2. Silver Shampoos though considered to be a purple shampoo works for those with grey or silver hair.
3. Blue Shampoo is great for dark hair with orange and brassy tones
4. Colour-Depositing Shampoo is designed to increase the longevity of your colored hair
5. Sulfate-free Shampoo especially after you color it so not to strip your hair of any essential oils.

TIP #4: Use Shampoo & Conditioner Correctly

Yes, there is a difference between what shampoo & conditioner are suppose to do for your hair. Your shampoo is designed to clean your roots while your conditioner is designed to smooth out and condition your hair from about mid length to tips.

To give your hair some extra love & attention, 1-2 times a month it’s good to focus on a deep condition and exfoliating your scalp. Many of you are probably all ready familiar with deep conditioning. I recently got a deep condition from my hair stylist and I am not joking in it was like night & day in the difference my hair was from when I walked in till I walked out.

Deep conditioning is going to give your hair a thorough cleanse from your scalp all the way to your tips. Many people don’t realize but “unfortunately, regular buildup of oil, dead skin cells, and leftover product can leave your scalp overloaded and less than healthy.” (L’Oreal Paris, 2020) Exfoliating your scalp will get rid of all that buildup and open up your pores allowing for hair to grow healthier and some have even said faster. Our scalp is skin too and it’s important for us to take care of it just like we take care of our skin every where else on our body.

Pro Dry Your Hair

I know you may be wondering why I have drying your hair in its own section. To ensure you have the best hair care routine possible, it’s important to also talk about what to do when it comes to drying your hair.

TIP #1: Air Dry Your Hair

According to L’Oreal Paris (2020), it’s important to air dry your hair as much as possible and if you need to put it up in a towel, squeeze out the excess as much as possible and then use an old cotton t-shirt. This is going to be much gentler to your locks.

TIP #2: Do a Blow Out to Last Days

For those of you who take a shower in the morning before heading out for the day or for whatever reason have to dry your hair right away you want to make sure you are doing it correctly. According to celebrity hair stylist Dan Sharp, “if you give yourself a fierce blowout on Monday, rock it out on Tuesday and on Wednesday do a fab high ponytail. Making your style last a few days will really help prevent damage.”  Not only are going to improve the health of your hair, think about the amount of time you are going to save in your daily routine!

Style with Minimal Damage

The way we style our hair is probably the one area that does the most damage to our hair. Think about how much damage you do between all the hot tools you use, the tight buns & ponytails you rock or even trying to brush out those tangles. They all cause damage to our locks.

So how can you style your hair with the least amount of damage as possible? Here are some tips to keep in mind:

• Use your fingers to detangle your hair as best as possible before using a brush or comb.
• Do your best to not pull hair back too tightly and if you do so, do it as least as possible.
• Make sure to use the right brushes for your hair type & style you want to achieve for example using a round brush to help you blow dry your hair and using a wide tooth comb to comb out your wet hair.
• Protect your hair from heat, sun, pollution & sweat w/ protectant products
• DO NOT USE STRAIGHTENER OR CURLING IRON ON WET HAIR!!!!
• Get a trim to cut off split ends every 6-8 weeks.

TIP #1: Add Maintaining Products While Wet

When it comes to applying protectants & other style maintaining products, it’s important to apply these to your hair when it is wet. This is especially true for those of us who have curly hair, wavy hair or anyone who has lots of frizz, you still can air dry your hair. According to Robert Vetica, “with curly hair, you want to do everything in the wet stage, otherwise the hair will start to frizz and droop as it dries.” He recommends to comb through a lightweight mousse and then flip your hair over & scrunch your hair with your fingers. (Firman, 2018) With my hair growth, my hair has become much more wavy so I do this trick as well and I will say it has helped make my hair look great for a lot longer of time.
