SPRING CLEANING GUIDE WITH AVON HOME CLEANING

Spring Cleaning with Avon Home Cleaning

Tomorrow will mark the first day of spring. Unlike last year at this time when most of us were required to stay home due to COVID-19 & had all the time in the world to focus on spring cleaning our home, this year, many of us have all ready or at least starting to getting back to “normalcy”. As a result, many of us just don’t have the time or patience to focus on doing a deep clean of our homes.

Why Should I Spring Clean My Home?

Ever since I could remember, everyone in my family did an annual spring cleaning where they would wash walls, deep clean the stove, dust all the surfaces and get our homes a boost after the long, dry, cold winters. I don’t know if it’s because we are finally able to open the windows to let fresh air in, if it’s the lemony scent of the multi purpose cleaners, the visual of a fresh start or maybe just the combination of it all, but I know after spring cleaning our homes, the atmosphere is just different! It’s lighter, brighter… It’s like a clean slate.

According to a Healthline article (March, 2020), not only does spring cleaning have your home “feel better”, but it also improves your health… yes that’s right! You will be able to do something towards that New Year’s resolution of living a healthier lifestyle in 2021 (or is that just me?). According to Healthline (March, 2020), spring cleaning will:

  • Strengthen your immune system
  • Decrease stress & depression
  • Prevent illness
  • Promote more health eating & physical activity
  • Reduce risk of injury

My 5 Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring cleaning can be daunting & to do it correctly, it can be time consuming. As a result, many of us will procrastinate, half ass it or let’s be honest…. not do it at all!. I know… sadly, I will admit, there have been a couple years where I did all three. Because of this, I have learned some tips along the way to help ensure I don’t do any of these things which I shared in my 2018 blog post, 5 Spring Cleaning Tips for Busy Moms… here are they updated versions:

Get Organized

For me, in order to accomplish even my day to day life, I have a checklist that I work off of and a schedule or routine that I do. Being a single mom of 4 boys who works at home, this is the only way to ensure that things get done in a timely manner and in a way where I am not overworking myself. Plus, I really enjoy checking things off and then at the end of the day, having a sense of accomplishment when I see what’s been checked off. Even if I don’t have all the items checked off and it’s only one thing, I know that I did something that day. Some of this mentality may come from the fact that when I was a stay at home mom, my ex husband acted like I just sat on my ass all day twiddling my thumbs. I really don’t care because I use this mentality to my benefit and it has been what has helped me accomplish all that I have in the last two years in spite of fighting Stage 3 cancer in 2019 and having surgery at the end of last year.

I create lists for all aspects of my life… work, personal, goals and yes… big projects I need to do around the house such as spring cleaning. I will go through each of my rooms and make a list of what needs to be done in each room. Of course there’s the basics… walls, windows, floors, surfaces. But each room has differences as well such as with bedrooms you need to add bedding or with the kitchen you need to add the stove & fridge or the bathroom… well I’m sure you get what I’m saying. Below is a basic list that you can use to help get you started:

Get Prepared

I’m sure you have at least the basic cleaning supplies you use for your regular cleaning. But let’s face it, when it comes to doing your spring cleaning, you are most likely going to wipe out of those supplies really quickly. On top of that, you will most likely will need more than just your basic cleaning supplies.

Make a list of all the supplies you will need- cleaners, sponges, tools, bucket, etc. Then, before you start cleaning, make sure you have everything you will need. Ensuring you have everything you will need is going to help prevent you running out of something mid cleaning and not finishing the job. Yes… this has happened to me.

Another thing you will want to make sure you have enough of is boxes & organizational supplies. When we spring clean, I know for me, this is when I declutter & organize my home. As I’ve said, having the supplies ready to go is going to ensure that you complete the job & not procrastinate. Trust me… you are going to appreciate an organized home. I am a single mom of 4 boys and yes, my boys are the stereotypical unorganized, messy type. Yes, they do complain when we are doing it, but every time they are so happy & appreciative of their rooms and home organized & clean once it’s all said & done.

Plan It Out

I understand many of us right now don’t have the “free time” like we did last year. With us getting back to what life was like before the pandemic, I know we are not going to want to spend every free moment cleaning & organizing. What I personally love to do is focus on one room at a time. Being a work at home mom, I have more flexibility so I will choose 1 day a week where I will focus on a room. Now, if you are someone who can’t focus a day, scheduling blocks of time will work just as well. This is another reason your list will come in handy. You can see what tasks have been done all ready and what tasks you will be able to complete in your allotted time.

Planning things out is also going to help make it where you are not going to feel overwhelmed. For most of my adult life, I lived in an apartment and I could do my spring cleaning in 1 weekend, 2 if I took my time. In 2017, I moved into a 4 bedroom house that is basically more than double of what I use to clean. With more space, there’s more to clean & more to declutter. So, as you can imagine, it takes me longer. So, what I do now is take my 1 day a week and focus on one room at a time bringing me to at least a 2 month ordeal. But that’s ok… as long as I continually work off my list, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Recruit Help

The way I see it, all who live in the home should be participating in spring cleaning the home. I am a single mom raising 4 boys and I want to ensure my boys know that “cleaning” is not just a “woman’s job”. If they live in the home, it is their responsibility to help take care of the home.

If your kids are old enough, give them a list of what they need to do in their own rooms and if your kids are like mine, give them a deadline of when it needs to be completed. This is going to teach your kids personal responsibility, personal hygiene and independence. For your younger kids, you can do the list with them. For the main rooms of your home, what I do is I lay the list out on the counter of what needs to get done that day and we will just go down the list each doing different tasks.

Another way to recruit help, if you can afford it, is to hire help. This past fall was the first time I did this and I have to say I loved it! To be honest, at the time, I really didn’t have the time nor the mental capability as I was about to go into surgery to remove my thymus gland which showed cancerous activity in my annual PET scan. I will say though, it was worth the investment. I hired a friend of mine who owns a cleaning business and had them do the “basics” like the walls, floors & main surfaces for the main floor of my home (2 bedrooms, kitchen & living room). It helped me out so much and was such a stress reliever that I plan on using them again to help me out for my spring cleaning. Hey… I can financially afford it and I am going to take advantage of this privilege

Reward Yourself

When all is said & done, make sure to reward yourself. You accomplished a major project and you should be proud of yourself! Just like we do for our kids, we need to remember to do positive reinforcements for ourselves. I know us moms tend to not do this… it is a thankless job. That is why it is up to us to thank ourselves for the amazing job you did & continue to do each & every day!
