Avon Follow Up Tips for Leads
As an Avon representative, there are two aspects of your business, sales & leadership. Follow up is one of the most profitable activities a representative can do, especially when it comes to recruiting. However, this is the number 1 activity that is not done on a consistent basis. “The trouble many people have in follow up is that they don’t have the tools, systems and a plan to reach out to their leads” (Leslie Trux, 2017). Having a system in place will help you know what you need to do, when you need to do it and have what you need right at your fingertips.
Why Follow Up is So Important
If you are looking to have a strong, profitable leadership business, then you need to be willing to put the time & energy needed to do so, especially in the beginning. The way Avon’s Advanced Leadership program is set up, it encourages more recruiting from the lower levels. However, once you do get to the higher levels of leadership, the focus is more on training your team so they can recruit & build their own team. So, if you are looking to get to those higher levels of leadership, having a follow up system is one of the best tools you can have in your arsenal.
Recruiting new representatives is not the easiest thing in the world. Recruiting quality representatives who will stick around & create successful businesses is even harder. Why? It is a known fact that most leads, aka prospects, will not say yes the first, second or even the third time.
As you can see from the Lead Simple chart above, your success rate of just making contact with your lead isn’t 80% or higher until you get to at least your 3rd attempt. I know when I first began doing research on this topic over a year ago, I was annoyed because the one thing I didn’t want to do was “bug people” and at first it seemed that was what was being recommended. What I have come to realize was that a good follow up system is not going to have you “bug people”. It is going to be a system that keeps you consistent. Just like with any other aspect of your business, consistency is what will bring you success. The way you need to look at it is “without good follow up, good marketing is like harvesting a big crop only to let it spoil out on the field” (Lead Simple, 2018).
Top 7 Follow Up Tips
Following up is not as easy as it may sound. I know for me at first it was an intimidating task. However, when done correctly, a follow up system is an amazing tool that will result in you reaching your goals.
Tip #1: Best Follow Up Is About Them, Not You
The most important tip I can give you is to keep the focus on them. “You can do this by learning about your leads’ feelings, goals and wants, and then providing a solution. The fact is most people don’t care about your company, pay plan, etc. They care about finding a solution to their problem” (Willard, 2017).
Your job at this point is to let him/her know how the Avon opportunity can meet their want/need. Look at your follow up as a way to teach him/her about the Avon opportunity & how it will make their life better. According to Hubspot 2018 statistics, only 1 in 4 people “want to discuss budget, authority, and timeline” (Frost, 2017). If done right, you will end up going over all the benefits he/she will care about during your conversations with your lead.
According to Hubspot’s 2018 statistics, the top 4 ways to create a positive experience with your leads (in sales & leadership) are:
- Listen to their needs (69%)
- Don’t be pushy (61%)
- Provide RELEVANT information (61%)
- Respond in a timely manner (51%)
When you create a positive experience each time you do reach out or speak with your lead, he/she is going to begin connecting with you which then leads to trusting you. Let’s face it, if someone doesn’t trust you or feel some type of connection with you, then why would they be willing to join your team?
Tip #2: Believe in Avon products & the Avon opportunity.
When you love something, you want to share it with everyone, right? You are excited & give off this energetic energy that will not only get people’s attention but will have people want to be apart of it. Let’s face it, no one likes to be around a “Negative Nancy”.
No matter what job or position you have, there are going to be aspects of it you don’t like. So get over it & focus on all the things you love about Avon and what the Avon opportunity has provided for you! When you look at “your product or service [as] a gift, and it’s your mission to help fulfill a need”, you will won’t look at following up as bothering people because you are providing an answer to their problem. (Worre, 2017).
Think about it. Look at all the top Avon representatives you see on Facebook & YouTube. They are all positive, happy and energetic when they discuss anything regarding their business. They must be on to something!
Tip #3: Categorize Your Leads
You are going to have a wide variety of leads come your way & I understand when you are first starting out in leadership, you are basically willing to take whatever comes your way. I am not saying that you should turn people away, however, you do need to consider that each lead is going to cost you minimally, time & energy. Why would you want to waste your time & energy on someone you know will NEVER join your team.
How will you know? This is where you need to be a little selfish & figure out what kind of team you want to have. People like being apart of like minded people. For me, I am a work at home mom & I focus on helping other moms provide for their family like Avon has helped me. Yes, I do have team members who are not moms, however, the majority of my team are moms. Our team is not only connected because we are Avon representatives, but also as moms who are looking to provide a better life for our children. It does provide a sense of sisterhood, a camaraderie.
Tip #4: Ask for Referrals
One of the best ways to get more leads is by asking for referrals. Yes, even from a lead! As Truex (2017) explains, “In many cases, your prospect may not be ready…, but he may know someone who is. So don’t be afraid to ask for referrals.” Let’s face it, when someone you know refers you to something new, you are more likely to give it a try right? Well you are not the only one. According to Hubspot statistics, 92% of people are more likely to trust referrals from people they know. (Frost, 2017) And as we discussed earlier, having trust is key when it comes to someone joining your team.
Tip #5: Use Different Forms of Contact & Providing Information
If you are looking for one tip that will have you stand out from all the rest, this is it. “The goal is to touch prospects in different ways in order to stay top of mind and stand out from the competition” (Lead Simple, 2017).
Most people will use only one, at most, two forms of contact. The recommendation is to do it all- email, snail mail, call & text. Yes, you are going to have to speak to your lead at some point. You are in a sales business & most people want to know who they are working with. This day in age with so many scams out there, reaching out to your lead in multiple avenues will actually show him/her that you are the real thing. As Truex (2017) explains, “Email and other systems are helpful in delivering follow up information, but people who hire or buy from you want to feel like you know them. That requires that you give a personal touch, which can be a phone call, a card or other item that can’t be automated and instead requires you reach out to them specifically.”
Another way to have you stand out from the competition is by providing information about Avon & being a representative in multiple contexts. What do I mean by this? You should provide information more then just speaking to your lead or sending them an email of a list of benefits. According to Hubspot statistics, the top 3 ways to get people’s attention is through videos, how tos & professional reviews. If you have a blog, YouTube Channel or even a Facebook page, those three activities can easily be accomplished.
Tip #6: Establish an Agreement on Next Step
Not every lead is going to be able to join right away. This is where this tip is important. If for some reason, a lead is not able to join at that time, discuss a timeline that would be good for you to follow up with him/her. Not only will this ensure that you don’t become a nuisance, but it will also provide a timeline for the both of you. If someone does not want you to contact them again, he/she will let you know and you should respect their wishes, which brings me to…
Tip #7: Track/Record All Transactions
It is important to keep track & notate each time you reach out & actually speak to your lead. When you are first starting out, you may not see the need because you are probably only managing a hand full of people. However, once you start getting more & more leads and as time goes by, having all that information is only going to help you. Tracking will be able to help you see when you contact your lead & when you need to contact them next, while notating your conversations “… will help you create a prospect-centered pitch… [and] give you clues for great follow up ideas.” (Truex, 2017)
NO, you do not need to create this elaborate system. Personally, I use ALMA & simple file system. I use ALMA to track my contacts & when I need to follow up while my file system consists of each lead having an individual file folder with a checklist of my follow up system & lined paper for me to write down a brief description of each contact. When its time to follow up, ALMA will send me a text message. Before I contact the lead again, I review my notes to not only refresh my memory but also give me ideas on what to discuss. For example, if a lead spoke to me in a previous conversation about expecting a new grandchild soon, one of my first questions would be is to ask about their new grandchild.
My Follow Up System for Leads
This system I have created was based on my online Avon training through what use to be called, Avon University, as well as my own personal experience & research. I have used this system for personal leads (meaning leads who personally contacted me) as well as Avon generated leads (those from ALMA).
Note: I use this as a guideline. Yes, life does happen with us Avon representatives too and I know personally, I can’t even guarantee to do this exact system 100% of the time.
- Lead from in person contact or ALMA lead:
- Call within 5 minutes of notification
- Call within 30 minutes of notification
- Call within 2 hours of notification

Keep in mind…
I know when I began my business, one of my biggest fears was being perceived as an annoyance. But I quickly learned that following up is key. People get busy, things come up, people forget. I know first hand I am guilty of all three of those on a regular basis. Once I began looking at follow up as more of me helping them, rather then about me reaching my numbers, I began to have much more success with not only people joining my team but actually getting quality team members. “The goal is to stay in front of prospects in a way that creates value rather than annoyance” (Lead Simple, 2018).
