Avon Fragrance Guide

Scent is the most powerful trigger for memories. There are some who only wear one signature scent while others have a wardrobe of scents that they choose from based on the occasion or even the outfit or “theme” you are looking to complete at that given moment. With this guide, you will not only learn all about the fragrances you can shop from Avon but also learn how to choose the perfect one for you. Set the mood & show off your personality with whatever fragrance you wear!

Choose the Perfect Fragrance

When it comes to choosing the perfect fragrance, there are two things you need to consider… what is the fragrance family & what type of fragrance is it. Knowing these will help you choose the perfect fragrance that not only will be your desired scent but also, the timeline of the fragrance.

Fragrance Families

When choosing the perfect fragrance, it’s important to know what notes & ingredients are in it. Fragrance notes from specific ingredients come together to create a unique scent. There are 3 layers of notes within a fragrance- Top, Heart & Base. According to Feeling Sexy Australia (2021), the top note is the scent you will immediately smell once the fragrance touches skin. This typically are light notes & will last about 15 minutes. The heart, aka middle, begins once the top notes fade. These are notes that bring balance between the top notes & base notes, giving you the core of the fragrance. These notes typically last for a few hours before base notes kick in. The base notes are typically warmer & are what last the longest. It’s basically what the fragrance will smell like once it has completely dried down onto the skin.

International perfume expert created the Fragrance Wheel, as shown in image, to help categorize & determine what note families will work best. There are 4 fragrance families (De Vlaming, 2022):

1. Amber (aka Oriental): Exotic, sensual scents that will have you feeling sexy with it featuring scent of vanilla, musk or sandalwood.
2. Florals: The epitome of femininity with their fruity or fresh blends that feature scents like rose or jasmine.
3. Fresh: Known as light, clean scents that often use green notes like “dew covered grass” or citrusy notes like lemongrass, orange, lemon zest or bergamot.
4. Woody: Bring warmth & comfort to the scent with notes of sandalwood or drier cedarwood.

Each note family is broken down even more. There are a total of 14 subfamilies. Knowing where each subfamily is on the Fragrance wheel can help you determine what will blend well together. The closer they are to each other, the better it will be.

Fragrance Types

Knowing the fragrance type is going to help you determine the longevity of the fragrance, how strong the scent will be as well as how complex it will be. There are 5 different types of fragrances (Berohn, 2022):

1. Parfum: With highest fragrance concentration of 20%-30%, this is the purest & strongest fragrance. With lower alcohol concentration, these scents can tend to last all day & is the best option for those with sensitive skin. However, due to it’s high fragrance concentration & typically being the most complex, these tend to be the most expensive.
2. Eau de Parfum: Most popular type of fragrance due to it’s ability to be versatile & long-wearing (not as long as parfums). With fragrance concentration of 15% to 20%, they are able to offer the complete 3 layered scent, however, the top note tends to fade rather quickly with the heart note being the main scent.
3. Eau de Toilette: Another popular type of fragrance with it being more affordable due to it’s less complexity, higher concentration of alcohol & lower fragrance concentration. Because of this, the scent typically lasts 4-6 hours with the top note being the dominant scent.
4. Eau de Cologne: With it’s 2% to 5% fragrance concentration, this does not last more than a couple hours. However, these tend to have a very strong top note & can be reapplied. Being the cheapest fragrance, these are typically used for daily use, except for those with sensitive skin due to the high concentration of alcohol.
5. Eau Fraiche: The least common fragrance type that is made with water instead of alcohol. With fragrance oil concentration of 1%-3%, these tend to be very soft & lift. These are the best option for those with sensitive skin or are sensitive to strong scents and are even budget friendly!

Avon Fragrances

For over 135 years, fragrances have been the backbone of Avon. Since then, they have created classic scents beloved by many along with unique signature scents with well known international fragrance design homes.

History of Avon Fragrances

Prior to starting Avon, founder, David H. McConnell, was a book salesman that offered perfume samples that he created himself, to hand out with each book purchase. He noticed that his women customers were more interested in the perfume samples then the books he was selling. So in 1886, he made a bold move & stopped selling books to focus on selling perfumes. With so many of his fragrances being from flowers in California, where his partner lived, he decided to name his new company, California Perfume Company.

Continually creating new scents, in 1906, they were first to introduce the world to the first musk perfume. Then by the 1950’s, with the help of being able to try different fragrance samples in the comfort of their own home, the infamous “Ding, Dong Avon is calling!” commercial was launched.

One of Avon’s most popular & best selling sensual scent, Imari, was then introduced in 1985. It’s a blossoming “fragrance to fire the imagination” with musk, incense & spice. In 1987, Avon launched even more well known fragrance scents that are still around today- Timeless & Candid.

In 1973, one of Avon’s best selling perfumes even to this day, Sweet Honesty, was launched. It’s a classic blend of floral, honey, citrus and vanilla- sweetness & happiness blended perfectly together!

Throughout the 90’s & 2000’s, Avon partnered up with celebrities like Derek Jeter, Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Dempsey, Fergie, Sofia Vergara & many more to create new limited edition scents that were beloved by customers.
