If you are or have ever been a parent of a teen then you will agree when i say that it is an emotional roller coaster. In some ways, with having a 17 year old who went through her “rebel” stage, I am good to go. Don’t they say boys get easier as they get older? Well I have to say that who ever said that is full of shit.

I went into this school year really wanting to have a positive & enjoyable year, especially considering this will be our last before our eldest goes off to college next fall. My two teen boys seem to have other plans. Since school started, our two 10th grade boys have been challenging us. We are very consistent & open about our expectations of our kids but for some reason, these 2 lately have been acting like our expectations are unreasonable.

The way I am looking at where I am at with parenting my two 15 year olds is to ensure that when they go off to college in 3 years, they will be able to take care of themselves & be responsible adults. I know I have taught them right from wrong. Now its all about fine tuning their decision making skills & providing them the skills to care for themself. As I have been trying to explain to them, I am not going to be around forever and I’m pretty sure whatever college they go off to is not going to be ok with Mommy staying in the dorm room to make sure they are doing what they are suppose to.

So when our teen chooses not to get up from school on time, chooses not to do their chore correctly, if at all, or chooses to blatantly disobey us, yes, it is our job for them to understand that when you make a negative choice, you will have a negative consequence. We don’t expect our kids to be perfect, but we do expect our kids to evaluate their choices & learn from the bad ones. I don’t know if it’s just a phase or just simply a typical teenage/parent power struggle but these boys seem to not be getting it.

Thankfully the week has come to an end & my fingers are crossed that I get through this week with my sanity intact. Until next week…
